Alcohol Consumption


Alcohol consumption’s health consequences have been a subject of epidemiological studies throughout the world. Most of the people think that consuming alcohol will only bring the bad consequences on one’s health. From the several studies in this few years, researchers stated that moderate alcohol consumed had benefits human from some aspect of health. Those who drink moderately have better health than those who drink heavily, and surprise, even better than those who don’t drink alcohol.
Alcohol is created when grains, fruits, or vegetables are fermented. Fermentation is a process that uses yeast or bacteria to change the sugars in the food into alcohol.

In chemistry, an alcohol is any organic compound in which a hydroxyl group (-OH) is bound to a carbon atom of an alkyl or substituted alkyl group. The general formula for a simple alcohol is CnH2n+1OH. Example: ethanol, the most common alcohol found in alcoholic beverage, also known as ethyl alcohol or drinking alcohol. Ethanol is a flammable, and colorless chemical compound.
Drinking alcohol offer some health benefits, especially for your heart. On the other hand, alcohol may increase your risk of health problems and damage your heart.  In fact, the key to be benefit is to consume only in moderation.

Here’re some health benefits of moderate alcohol use:
·        Reduce your risk of  developing heart disease
·        Reduce your risk of dying of a heart attack
·        Possibly reduce your risk of strokes, particularly ischemic strokes
·        Lower your risk of gallstones
·        Possibly reduce your risk of diabetes

Although small amount in alcohol may benefit human’s health but there is a group of people who are not recommended to consume alcohol.
·        Who are younger than legal drinking age
·        Who are pregnant
·        Individual that have a personal or strong family history of alcoholism
·        Individual that have a personal or strong history of breast cancer
·        Individual that have had hemorrhagic stroke
·        Individual that have liver or pancreatic disease
·        Individual who operate potentially dangerous equipment or machinery
·        Individual who are taking meditation

As summary, do not try to use alcohol if you did not take it before. And if you are drinking alcohol, it is best to do in moderation. Moderation means the drinking is not getting you intoxicated, or drunk, and you are drinking not more than 1 drink per day if you are a woman and no more than 2 if you are a man. Please do remember, small dose of alcohol can benefit your health but consume it heavily will definitely harm you.
